Concussion baseline testing usually refers to measurements of symptoms, cognition, balance or neurological function taken before an injury. EVENT adds a different kind of baseline: a biological saliva reference collected while the athlete is healthy.
What traditional baseline testing measures
Conventional concussion baselines can help clinicians understand an athlete’s pre-injury function. They may include symptom inventories, cognitive testing, balance measures and other clinical assessments. These tools are different from a biological specimen and answer different questions.
What a biological baseline adds
A biological baseline preserves a sample of what the athlete’s biology looked like before the injury. If a concussion later occurs, new biomarker measurements can be compared with that individual starting point instead of relying only on population averages or a post-injury sample.
Why it must happen before injury
Once a concussion occurs, the athlete’s healthy pre-injury biology cannot be recreated. That is the core reason EVENT BASELINE exists.
Research supports the value of pre-injury sampling in longitudinal sports concussion studies. In the SCRUM study, researchers collected preseason saliva from 1,028 professional rugby players and compared later samples around head-injury assessments. Read the study.
